Chapter 12

No matter what position Paytah made them run, walk, or crawl to the location the man seemed intent on getting to, Aidan didn’t even feel a twinge of pain. That drug was a freaking miracle. Just minutes earlier he’d been sure he’d never walk again. Now he was sprinting fast enough to keep pace with Paytah.

He needed to find out where he could get more. Pumped full of whatever that drug was, Aidan was sure he wouldn’t mind exercising to get into shape.

His mate stopped behind another partially collapsed wall, just as the team Rune had warned them about came into view. Aidan held his breath, praying the men hadn’t seen them. Mounting a rescue with only one soldier and a psychiatrist, who didn’t even know how to shoot a gun, would be hard enough when the enemy didn’t know they were there. If anyone saw them, their slim chances would turn to impossible.

Tapping Paytah’s shoulder he waited until his mate turned to look at him. Not wanting to risk being heard, he mouthed the word “gun.” Slowly as if each movement might alert the men walking in a slow circle around the ruins, Paytah pulled out his tablet.

With fingers that seemed to fly across the screen, Paytah tapped out a message to Rune first. Then he tapped out another one for Aidan to read. “Do you even know how to shoot?”

He shook his head back and forth. He’d never even touched a gun before. Guns had been outlawed after the Great War with the humans. Alek Rykov felt paranormals already had too big an advantage over humans to need a gun.

When the psy started the Paranormal War, they scoffed at the Alliance’s ban on guns, using them in every battle fought. The Alliance military had no choice but to start carrying them, for the range of a gun was too great for shifters to get close enough to fight the enemy without getting themselves shot.

But the citizens still weren’t allowed to own a gun. Anyone caught had to face their Alpha. Even though some of the Alphas didn’t really care one way or another about guns, if it was discovered they were allowing it, they would have to face the Alpha Primus, and no one, not even the other Alphas wanted to do that.

Even if Aidan hadn’t touched a gun before, it couldn’t be that hard. Just point and shoot. Seemed pretty simple to him. Typing that out, he watched his mate’s amusement as he read what Aidan had written.

The tablet was handed back to him after Paytah had typed him a message. Just make sure not to point it at me.

A gun was pressed into his hands. Paytah took the tablet back and typed another sentence. And for gods’ sake don’t shoot yourself.

Aidan rolled his eyes. Why would he shoot himself? That didn’t even make sense. There was a psst sound as several rocks near his feet seemed to explode. If Paytah hadn’t put his hand on Aidan’s shoulder, he would have jumped up in fear, most likely exposing their position.
